In the 1980’s, GM introduced a new type of master cylinder known as the quick-take-up master cylinder。 This design uses a cylinder bore that has a large diameter near the mounting flange。 This “stepped-bore” master cylinder will move a large volume of fluid under low pressure on initial brake pedal application。 In the fill port of the master cylinder there is a special valve called the quick take-up valve that controls fluid flow into the cylinder bore。 These master cylinders are composite types and may be found in conventional or diagonally split versions。
Special bleeding procedures are necessary with this type of cylinder。 In shops today, it is very uncommon to overhaul master cylinders。 Brake parts suppliers have increased the cost of master cylinder kits, and rebuilders have reduced the cost of rebuilt units。 This makes it economically impractical to overhaul master cylinders in the field。 Remanufactured master cylinders typically cost about 20% less than a repair kit for the same cylinder and the remanufactured units carry a warranty。 So, from both an economic and a liability standpoint, the technician and the car owner will both be better satisfied with a quality remanufactured master cylinder。
Whenever a defective master cylinder is replaced, the new unit must be bench bled before it is installed on the vehicle。 Here are the steps in replacing a typical master:Remove and discard as much of the old fluid as possible。Break the lines loose at the master cylinder。 Use the proper size of flare-nut wrench。 Do not remove lines at this timeRemove the two nuts that attach the cylinder to the brake booster or bulkhead。Remove the lines and the cylinder。Clamp the new cylinder in a vice on the mounting flanges。
