The only solution is replacement of the backing plate。Figure 2-9: A wheel cylinder that clips to the backing plate。 Since most disc brake calipers and wheel cylinders are relatively components, many technicians are tempted to overhaul them。 This is not recommended by most experts。 When you add the cost of the parts with their markup and the amount of labor time involved in the overhaul process you will often find that it will make more sense to replace these components rather than attempt repair。
Remember: If you purchase a rebuilt part and properly install it on a customers vehicle, the rebuilder assumes the liability and provides the warranty on that part。 If you rebuild it, you assume that responsibility。 All hydraulic system output devices calipers and wheel cylinders must have some provision for removing trapped air。 Small screw type valves called bleeder valves are installed into these devices at their highest points。 By opening these valves, the technician can remove trapped air bleeding the brakes and flush the hydraulic system。
Figure 2-10: A bleeder valve。Control Devices For the braking system to perform correctly under various operating and environmental conditions, designers have developed various hydraulic system control devices to fine-tune the system。 These components seldom cause trouble but when they do malfunction, the performance of the brake system may be reduced to the point that the vehicle is not safe to drive。 A brake technician must understand the functioning of these various devices in order to properly diagnose braking system problems。
