。 Above the cylinder is a reservoir for fluid。 As the piston s moves forward when the brake pedal is depressed, fluid is displaced or pushed ahead of them。 This causes a rise in pressure in all parts of the hydraulic system。 Prior to 1967, American cars and trucks used a master cylinder with only one piston。 With this design, if a leak occurred in one part of the system, it would result in total loss of braking。 All models from 1967 on are required by law to be equipped with a “split hydraulic system” meaning that the master cylinder has 2 pistons with each piston sending fluid to two brakes。

Along with the changes in the hydraulic system, a warning light and triggering system is installed on the vehicle to indicate a hydraulic system failure。 With this dual hydraulic system, if one half of the system fails due to a leak, the other half will still function normally although pedal travel will increase and braking system effectiveness will be reduced。 While domestic vehicles were predominantly rear-wheel drive RWD , the hydraulic system was split from front to rear。 This is known as conventionally split。

When domestic front-wheel drive FWD became popular in the 1980’s with their heavy front to rear weight bias, the diagonally split system came into use。 In this system one front brake shares a master cylinder piston with an opposite side rear brake。 Since the front brakes do about 80% of the stopping on FWD cars, this will result in better brake performance in the event of a failure in one half of the hydraulic system, but, the vehicle will have a tendency to pull to the side with the functioning front brake。
