Cords of cotton string or synthetic fibers are wrapped around the inner hose to give it strength to avoid expanding or bursting。 Two more of these hose/cord layers may be used。 An outer jacket of tough, yet flexible material surrounds the cord body to offer resistance to abrasion。 Fittings are crimped onto the ends of the hose so that it can be attached at each end。 Hoses must be the correct length for the intended application to prevent contact in moving parts and subsequent damage。 Hoses are prone to another problem that is peculiar to their construction。
At times, the inner liner of a brake hose cracks。 When this happens, fluid under high pressure finds its way into the crack and causes a bulge in the inside of the hose。 This bulge acts a check valve to prevent fluid returning to the master cylinder when the brakes are released。 When this occurs, the brake on that wheel will drag and wear rapidly。 The fittings used in hydraulic brake systems are usually inverted flare but the ISO or “bubble” flare is growing inFigure 2-1: Different fittings found in hydraulic systems。
popularity。 A special flaring tool is necessary to form useable flares on steel tubing。On some applications, banjo style fittings are used, especially where brake hoses attach to brake calipers。 A few ABS hydraulic systems use O-ring type fittings。Figure 2-2: On the left is an inverted flare。 On the right is an ISO or bubble flare。Figure 2-3 : A dual hydraulic master cylinder is actually two cylinders in one。Input devices The input to the hydraulic brake system is the master cylinder。 The master cylinder consists of a relatively small diameter 1” cylinder fitted with a piston or pistons that are connected via a pushrod to the brake pedal。
