Sunderland University was once one of Britain's first polytechnics, itself formed from local schools of science and arts. One of its campuses, St Peter's, built from wood, glass and concrete on the banks of the River Wear where there were once shipyards, has won both architectural and environmental awards. The town of Sunderland has had its core industries ripped away over the past few decades but is working hard to align itself for the future: it is one of the more popular locations for call centres in the UK.

It is committed to the local area: many courses are designed with the local automobile industry in mind. The glass industry's heritage in the area is reflected in the degree in glass and ceramics design. There is also a large pharmacy department and business school. Sunderland, which doubled in size during the 1990's, is committed to doubling the number of students from the immediate area by a mixture of access schemes, taster courses and encouragement of mature students and those who have traditionally had little access to higher education.

Going out in Sunderland itself is possible but the students' union also runs a variety of nights and performances.
