Previous to 7 Degrees announcing the release of Axiom I had come in contact with the Dephosphorus name, but I hadn’t heard anything by them. The fact that I’d seen the name around might not come as such a big surprise seeing as they’ve done a good job at promoting themselves long before the release; they’ve had both reviews written of it and have had it up for download. It’s in fact available for download on their website right now, so anyone’s free to see what astrogrind really sounds like.

Astrogrind is a phrase the band use to describe their style, and while it might sound a bit spacey it does fit very well in with the whole concept of lyrics, music and artwork. Axiom is pretty spacey, and it doesn’t surprise me the least to read that the drummer can be found in the black metal act Injekting Khaos while the two other lads previously had a death metal inspired grindcore project called Straighthate. ‘Cause well, that’s pretty much what Dephosphorus sounds like; a mixture of said genres. Just add a dose of stark hardcore and a bit of experimental ambience and you’ve completed the recipe.

Taking Continuum as an example it’s a track with clear metallic influences from both death and black metal riff wise, while the drumming bears the aesthetics of both typical punkish grind beats as classic grindcore blasting. While this is the typical sound for Axiom there are moments when the riffing will go all-out black metal, moments of atmosphere-laden hardcore (On the verge of an occurrence starts off in a manner I’d characterize as typically German) will take the driver’s seat just as weird-ass samples of noise intertwines effortlessly in between styles. The song structures never follow the same pattern, and the tunes definitely carry enormous differences from one another, but it’s all weaved together in a sound that I say I’ve only ever heard from Dephosphorus. Full on brutality and blasting suddenly goes straight on progression, and there’s not a moment of slothfulness. Vocally the harsh screaming voice really ooze of desperation, and is flavoured with just a hint of angst. He also momentarily goes for a deeper and darker semi-growling style, and it works quite well albeit not being the most convincing growl I’ve heard in my days.

It took me a while to really get into what’s actually going on here, and it’s not that I fear progression or experimentalism (certainly not when it’s done with skill like in this case), but there was something about that kept me from fully getting into it. I think one problem might be the production, as it is a bit on the crude side. There’s absolutely no problem hearing each instrument and the vocals come through nicely, but it sounds a bit unmixed and unmastered, like it’s not the finished product. I miss a sense of heaviness, a chunkier sound that seals it all together in a completely cohesive package. But with that being said it seems like I’m the only one having issues with the production, and from what I’ve read and heard no one else have any remarks on the matter. Everyone love Dephosphorus and it feels like they’re currently the rage of everyone who’s heard Axiom. I definitely like it, but there’s still room for improvement. No doubt however that they’re on to something.
