The present study examined whether the discriminative properties of prompts are critical for establishing a difficult (septagon, octagon) discrimination through time delay。 Three groups of 4- to 5-year-old children participated in Experiment 1。 Following unsuccessful trial-and-error training, time delay was initiated。 A red cue was used for prompting the correct stimulus。 The cuc differed across 。。。 [Show full abstract] groups。 It emphasized a distinctive feature, a nondistinctive feature, or no feature of that stimulus。

None of the subjects learned the task。 The same subjects participated in Experiment 2, where two red cues were used, one for highlighting the distinctive feature of the correct stimulus and one for highlighting the distinctive feature of the incorrect stimulus。 Following discrimination training on the cues, both cues were used in time-delay training。 Most subjects now learned the task。 Experiment 3 replicated the findings of Experiments 1 and 2 using four new groups of 4- and 5-year-old children。

One group first received discrimination training on the two distinctive feature cues before they were used as prompts in time-delay trials。 The other three groups were first trained to respond to only one (distinctive, nondistinctivecritical resource,no-feature) prompt which was then used in time delay。 The results confirmed the superiority of the multiple-stimulus distinctive-feature promptscritical resource, thereby implying that the stimulus dimensions of the prompts are critical when using time delay for establishing a difficult discrimination。
