MPlayer is a movie and animation player that supports a wide range of codecs and file formats, including MPEG 1/2/4,DivX 3/4/5, Windows Media 7/8/9, RealAudio/Video up to 9, Quicktime 5/6, and Vivo 1/2. It has many MX/SSE(2)/3Dnow(Ex) optimized native audio and video codecs, but allows using XAnim’s and RealPlayer’s binary codec plugins, and Win32 codec DLLs. It has basic VCD/DVD playback functionality, including DVD subtitles, but supports many text-based subtitle formats too. For video output, nearly every existing intece is supported. It’s also able to convert any supported files to raw/divx/mpeg4 I (pcm/mp3 audio), and even video grabbing from V4L devices.

SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more.

SMPlayer Features

It remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave

Configurable subtitles. You can choose font and size, and even colors for the subtitles.

Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs.

Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video.

Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.

Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion.

Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).

Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.

Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video audio codecs.

Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too.

Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog.

Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into Spanish, German, Slovak, Italian, French, Simplified-Chinese, Russian and Hungarian.

It's multiplatform. Binaries available for Windows and Linux.

Install SMPlayer in Ubuntu

First you need to download the .deb package from here using the following command

wget

Install .deb package using the following command

sudo dpkg -i smplayer_0.5.0_i386.deb

This will complete the installation.

If you want to open SMPlayer go to Application--->SoundVideo--->SMPlayer

Once it open you should see similar to the following screen

Hi,

Did what you said but SMPlayer is not available on the Menu (although there is an icon of sorts.) I am not experienced with the menu editor to correct it any advice?

Tried to open it via the GNOME Terminal w/sudo SMPlayer and got the following response error while loading shared libraries: libQt3Support.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

Note: I am using LTS Dapper

one question Ive dowloaded and installed 0.5.0 version of smplayer. My intece is very bad-looking. In your screen smplayer seems more integrated with qt engine. why? I have 4.2.3 versione of qt.Heres a screen of my smplayer

I really like SMPlayer. I only found a few problems when using it, that is for some reason I couldnt get subtitles to work. Aside from this little gripe it was just heavenly.

Ive been looking for a long time for a good video player. SMplayer is really good, it does everything I need, and it handles subtitles really great.

For Pierissimo: run qtconfig (or qtconfig-qt4) and there you can change the style, fonts for all Qt 4 apps.

For Lowks: its strange that subtitles dont work. Try for instance to change the font for subtitles in the preferences dialog.

For Jj and MyKel: you need to install the qt3support package.

How to adjust the brigtness, contrast? It is changing to default everytime I open new video file? How to get custom brightness etc?

Im using Dapper LTS. You may want to further refine the installation w/ instructions on how to install in Dapper LTS and subsequent releases. Heres a readout of what I got after following the instructions:

Video->Equalizer. Adjust the brightness, contrast as you like, and the click on the button Set as default values. These values will be use for all videos.

Used to use this on Xandros and Ubuntu Hardy Heron awesome!! Just installed it on Ubuntu Eee, instead of Totem player, and it wont play any files at all but MPlayer does :s ??
